A Period Drama Update ...

Way back in April I posted all about my love for PERIOD DRAMA. I know there are more like me out there. Are you a kindred spirit? Judging from my Facebook timeline, it seems like everyone LOVES Downton Abbey and I am NO exception (Especially since I cheated and watched the ENTIRE second season along with the UK in the fall:), but I need some suggestions. What are your favorites? I'll share my top 5:

1. Pride and Prejudice.

The BBC version from 1995.
That's all I have to say~

2.Downton Abbey

I don't think I can put into words how much I love this series. If you haven't seen it yet, go right now and watch it on Netflix. Or PBS. Or online. Just do it. I promise you'll thank me!

3. Bleak House
AMAZING! I loved each and every episode. Plus, it gave me a brand new love for Dickens, which leads me to number 4 ...

4. Little Dorrit

Oh so lovely! I loved the characters, the interaction, the story. FABULOUS!

5. A Room With a View

I watched it for the first time in 1989. I don't think I appreciated the beauty of it until last night when I watched it again. It's STUNNING! And I LOVE Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy.

I also loved both Cranfords, Every BBC Jane Austen, North and South (not the US Civil War one), Mansfield Park and the last BBC Jane Eyre.

Now it's your turn! What are your favorites?

Please share with me! Let's dish:)

  1. I never really got into period shows/movies BUT I started watching Downton Abbey and I LOVE IT!!! I can't find any of my friends who watch it except for an old high school friends wife who I am friends with on facebook! I finally talked my sister int buying the 1st season so I would have someone to talk to about this show. I'll have to start watching the shows on your list. They all look so good!!

  2. I am also enjoying Downton Abby and P&P with Colin Firth is a classic, of course, but I also enjoyed the new Jane Eyre that came out a year or two ago. It was majestic. I love Room with a view but my fave Merchant Ivory film with Helena Bonham Carter is Howard's End. And I love the more recent remake of Pride and Prejudice even though Kiera Knightly is horribly wrong as Elizabeth. But Matthew Macfayden as Mr Darcy makes me swoon!

  3. I LOVE period drama and in particular am loving Downton Abbey. It's FABULOUS! I also like Pride & Prejudice (I can't remember which version I liked best) Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslett and I enjoyed The Importance of Being Ernest as well. I'm looking forward to seeing Bleak House--I had never heard of it before.

  4. LOVE all of the above, but have not yet watched Little Dorrit. (Think they have it on NetFlix Instant?) Sometimes searching by your favorite period actors will give you a few new films to check out. BBC rocks!

  5. I LOVE Downton Abbey! Look forward to 3rd season!
    I own season 1 & 2 dvds. I enjoyed the show a lot.

  6. thanks so much for the referral to downton abbey! i rarely watch t.v. and i ended up watching all of season 1 within a few days. couldn't get enough of it! can't wait to start watching season 2. then will move on to your other recommendations. :)

  7. Lark Rise to Candleford is the one you are missing. It stars a very special favorite character from Downton Abbey and it gets better with each season. :)
